 Maureen Doyle-Scharff, MBA, FACME, Director, Medical Education, US External Medical Affairs, Pfizer Inc Maureen recently joined Pfizer in August 2007. In 2005 Maureen joined Ross Products Division, Abbott Laboratories, and was Director of Health Education, Policy and Programs. In that capacity she led a team of professionals working in three core area: alliance/advocacy development, public policy/reimbursement, and continuing professional development for physicians, nurses, pharmacists and dietitians. Before joining Abbott, she worked for Johnson & Johnson as Executive Director, Alliances and Advocacy for their Government Affairs & Policy division. Prior to joining J&J, Maureen spent 7 years with The Upjohn Company/Pharmacia&Upjohn/Pharmacia Corp., serving in a number of capacities including healthcare education, advocacy development, brand management and managed care strategies, all with a particular emphasis on partnerships, continuing medical education and continuing professional development. Maureen frequently lectures on Provider/Industry Collaboration and Alliance and Advocacy topics, serves on the Board of Directors for the Alliance for Continuing Medical Education and the Global Alliance for Medical Education, is a member of the AMA National Provider/Industry CME Collaboration Taskforce and PACME, the Pharmaceutical Alliance for Continuing Medical Education. Additionally, Maureen is the founder and president of the Ohio Affiliate/Chapter of the HBA (Healthcare Business Women’s Association) and serves on a number of specialty society and patient advocacy advisory boards. Pamela L. Mason, BS, FACME, CCMEP, Director, Medical Education Grants Office, AstraZeneca Pamela Mason has over 20 of years pharmaceutical experience and has held numerous leadership positions in scientific communications, outcomes management, scientific strategy, medical affairs and medical education. She was one of the AstraZeneca leaders who helped launch the Medical Education Grants Office in early 2005. In her current role, she leads a team that has responsibility for independent education grants and the review process. She has been a long time member of the Alliance for CME serving on several committees over the years and is currently serving as vice-chair of PACME. She also serves on the Board of Directors for NC-CME. She is a member of the National Task Force on CME Provider/ Industry Collaboration and was the conference chair of the 18th annual conference held in October 2007. Mike Saxton, MEd, FACME Senior Director, Team Leader, Medical Education Group, US External Medical Affairs, Pfizer Inc Mike is a strong advocate for change within the pharmaceutical industry in terms of how it supports continuing professional development of healthcare providers. He combines 27 years of pharmaceutical industry, CME provider and consulting experience in the area of CME best practices relative to commercial support issues. He recently returned to industry and now serves as the team lead for the newly formed Medical Education Group at Pfizer working with a group of people in order to continue serving as a catalyst for change. Upon returning to industry, he has been a champion for such issues as transparency, how industry can support the direction the ACCME has set for providers, block grants and providing greater grant access for under-resourced education providers like community hospitals. His volunteer activities have included the Alliance for Continuing Medical Education (ACME) Board of Directors, CME Advancement Task Force, AMA National Task Force on CME Provider & Industry Collaboration, chair of the 2007 ACME Annual Conference, editorial board of JCEHP (Journal of Continuing Education in the Health Professions), co-chair of the Pharmaceutical Alliance for CME (PACME) and other volunteer activities focused on adopting best practices in CE that responsibly align patient needs with industry CME support resources. Jennifer S. Smith, Ph.D., FACME, Executive Director, Professional Education Support, Wyeth Pharmaceuticals
Jennifer is Executive Director-Professional Education Support Department for Wyeth Pharmaceuticals. Her responsibilities include managing the educational strategies across Wyeth’s therapeutic areas, establishing and maintaining provider collaboration, and increasing the efficiency, productivity and compliance of the independent education grants review and approval process. Dr. Smith is Chair of Wyeth’s Independent Education Grants Review Committee. Prior to joining Wyeth, Dr. Smith was President of SCIOS Continuing Education, an unaccredited medical education company, and spent seven years as Executive Director with two separate ACCME, ACPE and ANCC accredited providers. Dr. Smith is the current Chair of the Pharmaceutical Alliance for CME (PACME). She is the past Director of Communications for the North American Association for Medical Education and Communications Companies (NAAMECC), the past Editor-in-Chief of the Alliance for CME’s Almanac, and served as Co-Chair of the ACME’s Awards Committee. She participates as faculty yearly for the AMA’s Task force on Industry/Provider Collaboration in CME, has been on multiple CME committees and advisory boards and recently retired as an ACCME site surveyor. Dr. Smith has published in the area of alcohol’s effects on cognition and fetal alcohol syndrome and the effects of alcohol consumption on female reproductive physiology and endocrinology.
